If you want buyers to “give the green light” to their agents when visiting your listing, then keep appropriate colors in mind. Specifically, with first impressions being so important, the colors you chose outside and in can make all the difference in the world to buyers.

Bold hues may help make you comfortable and content, but they might also turn off a buyer. The old adage certainly applies when contemplating color configurations for your home. The more muted and common the tone, the higher the probability the décor will not offend discerning buyers imagining themselves living in your home. If the existing paint scheme is pleasing to the buyers’ eyes, the greater the chance these soon-to-be owners will make a higher offer feeling the property is move-in ready.

The following suggestions are intended to help please buyers with your color selections and get multiple offers on the table.

Start with the exterior of the home first.

The old saying, “you only get one chance to make a strong first impression” continues to be very true. If the outside of the property is not appealing, few buyers will request that their agent park in front of the house and take them inside for a critical tour.

Not only must the exterior base coat and trim be pleasing to the eye and very well maintained – and fit in with the rest of the neighborhood, the mailbox post should also be in top-notch order and painted (if appropriate). The home should also be adorned with visible and easy to read house numbers, clean and dent-free garage doors, and well-maintained adjoining fencing.

The interior should be seen as superior.

By this, it means that the inside paint should follow a pleasing palate and not be too bold in any given room. White or muted earth tones are the preferred colors to help reflect light and make rooms seem larger. This is especially true if the windows are covered with ornate or dark window dressings. Baseboards should also be light colors and compliment the adjacent wall color. The kitchen should be tastefully done in common, subdued colors with stainless steel appliances. Lighter cabinets make the room appear larger. Advice for the bedrooms and bathrooms is the same: lighter paint colors and light colored cabinets. Highlight décor with complementary respective accessories, including bedding, towels and floor mats.
